Hace algunos años en 1,988 George Sluitzer hizo "Spoorloos", filme Holandés inspirado en una novela de Tim Kraabe llamada Het Gouden Ei ( El huevo de oro). El caso es que la dirección , las actuaciones y la caracterización de los personajes ( especialmente la del profesor psicópata) son fantásticamente aterradoras.

La industria cinematográfica norteamericana recogió la historia y contrató a Sluitzer para que escribiera el guión, dirigiera "The vanishing" y el dinero se multiplicára. El caso es que el producto hollywoodense, a pesar de tener básicamente la misma trama, buenos actores y mucho dinero invertido no llegó a cuajar nunca. La historia jamás parecio verosímil.
